Real or staged? Toronto Raptors mascot drops flatscreen TV won by fan

Posted

This hilarious mishap -- well, hilarious to everyone except the intended recipient -- might seem to some to be just a bit too perfect to be real.

During Friday night's game between the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks, the Raptors mascot was delivering a new flatscreen television to a fan who had won a drawing.

But before the TV made it to the fan, the Raptors mascot had a bit of an accident. (Make sure to watch with the volume up for the reaction of the public address announcer.)

That can't be good. #WeTheNorth

Funny stuff, for sure. But here are some clues that, for whatever reason, this "accident" was staged:

-The above video was posted from the Raptors' official Instagram account. If this was a real accident, would the Raptors really want to advertise it?

-That TV was very poorly secured and seemed to slide out of the box way too easily.

-If the TV wasn't supposed to slide out of the box, there's a good chance the PA announcer would have continued on as if nothing was wrong.

-Wouldn't it have made more sense to give the fan the opportunity to claim the TV after the game, instead of having a huge TV to deal with at his/her seat for the remainder of the game?

Regardless of the real story here -- and the reasons behind it -- at least the Raptors mascot didn't blow out his Achilles as he did three years earlier.
