Two men are dead after they were hit by a car on Loop 202 South Mountain near Elliot road Friday night.

Department of Public Safety officials say the two men were filling up their vehicle with gas on the shoulder around 6:35 p.m. when they were hit by a car. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver that hit them remained on the scene. The driver was not impaired or injured.

The victims have been identified as Albert Tabaha Sr and Calbert Tabaha. DPS believes they were father and son.

"It just happened that quick," said Delbert Tabaha. "Within a matter of seconds, I lost my dad and my brother."

Delbert tells ABC15 that those final moments with his brother and father are still fresh on his mind.

His life changed forever on Friday when the pair were helping him put gas in his van after he ran out. Delbert said he had been to his dialysis appointment and was trying to run errands when he realized the van was out of fuel.

"I just wanted to get home and all of a sudden that happened," said Delbert. "And my brother and my dad came out to help me."

He said they were all wearing vests and using the hazards on the truck his brother and dad brought.

"They said something to me, so I turn he goes yeah we will be about done in two minutes," described Delbert.

He said when he turned back to watch traffic a car was coming right at them. It missed Delbert but hit Albert Sr. and Calbert.

Delbert rushed to check on both his family members, but they died on the scene. A Good Samaritan jumped in to make sure no other cars hit the two men.

"I never got to thank him, so hopefully through your broadcast I can thank him for what he did," said Delbert.

The Tabaha family and Delbert are now feeling lost. They are preparing for two funerals instead of planning Albert Sr.'s 77th birthday.

An online fundraiser has been created to help with funeral expenses. Delbert told ABC15 his family is Navajo and they are working out how to lay his brother and dad to rest at the reservation.

The investigation is ongoing.
