PHOENIX — After years of construction and waiting, the South Mountain Freeway has opened today, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The freeway will connect the east and west valley.
Per ADOT:
The South Mountain Freeway will connect to Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) at 59th Avenue and go south along 59th Avenue to Elliot Road where the freeway alignment turns southeast to the current Pecos Road alignment and connects to Interstate 10 (Maricopa Freeway) and the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) on the east end.
ADOT will continue to work on parts of the 202 into 2020, now that it is open. Some of the work will include a traffic interchange at 32nd Street and 6-mile path between 40th Street and 17th Avenue in Ahwatukee.
