AVONDALE, AZ — A child is dead and five others are hurt after a crash this morning in Avondale.
On Wednesday morning, Avondale police responded to a crash near 107th Avenue and Roosevelt.
Six people were taken to a hospital for various injuries, including four children.
Later, officials announced a 10-year-old boy had died at the hospital.
Three other children, a nine-year-old boy, a five-year-old girl, and a one-year-old boy, remain in the hospital.
A man and woman were also taken to hospitals.
Police say impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but an investigation remains underway.
“He told me to get his other kids out of the car but we couldn’t help because the car was smashed and totaled,” said Dumari McNeal.
He and others rushed to help moments after the crash.
“My mother is inconsolable,” said the kid’s great uncle Jeremy Castillo. “My mother lives for her grandkids, her great-grandkids, for the family. It's been really tough.”
Castillo said his parents were already in the Valley for the holidays, but other family members in nearby states have rushed to Arizona for support.
“As for right now we are just getting updates here and there on some of the kids,” said Castillo. “Some are doing better than others.”
“I’m hoping and praying for the family,” said McNeal. “I hope the dad is okay. I hope the little girl is okay. That’s tragic to go through that at a young age.”
