Nine people were injured, including two young children, after a suspect opened fire at a splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday evening, officials said.
Rochester Hills is about 30 minutes north of Detroit.
The suspect reportedly drove up to the splash pad just after 5 p.m. and fired more than 20 shots before leaving the scene.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the injured ranged in age from 4 to 78, some of whom are from the same family.
Two of the victims were said to be in critical condition, an 8-year-old and a 39-year-old. The others were reportedly stable as of Saturday night.
Initially, authorities believed there could have been up to 10 victims, but that number was lowered late Saturday.
“It’s heartbreaking… complete thoughts with the families right now,” said Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett.
Bouchard said law enforcement was able to track the suspect to a residence in nearby Shelby Township. SWAT attempted to make contact but later learned the suspected shooter was deceased. The suspected gunman died by suicide, authorities said.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she is in touch with local officials and is monitoring updates as they come in.
