Tornadoes are a very rare occurrence in central Arizona, but they do happen.
According to data obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service in Phoenix, there have been 44 recorded tornadoes in central Arizona since 1956.
The most recent tornado encounter happened in July 2006 when it touched ground near Bumble Bee.
Tornado activity is more common in the northern part of the state.
