If your little one is in need of a new car seat, there’s no better time to get one than during Walmart’s first-ever car seat recycling event.
Walmart has teamed up with TerraCycle, a recycling company, for what it says will be the country’s largest car seat recycling event. From Sept. 16-30, Walmart is asking you to trade in a gently used car seat to the service desk of one of nearly 4,000 participating Walmart stores. In exchange, you’ll get a $30 Walmart gift card.
All car seats collected through the program will be provided to TerraCycle and turned into recyclable materials. The gift card can be used to buy something new for your kids — or yourself! — at Walmart in-store or online.

Children need different car seats at different stages of growth, and you will want to make sure that your current car seat fits your child’s needs.
“Safety – especially car seat safety – is a top priority for Walmart’s Baby department, so we wanted to use our size and scale to create an event that offered unprecedented access to trade in an outgrown car seat for a gift card – perfect for using on your baby’s next car seat,” Melody Richards, the vice president of Walmart Baby said in a press release. “Sustainability is of equal importance to Walmart, so we’re happy to work with TerraCycle who will recycle every component of the car seats.”
Tom Szaky, CEO and founder of TerraCycle, also said in a press release that the two companies expect to divert the plastic equivalent of approximately 35 million water bottles from landfills with the number of car seats they’ll be recycling.
While this is the first car seat recycling event for Walmart, Target launched their car seat recycling event in 2016 and since then have recycled more than 11.9 million pounds of materials.
This year’s car seat trade-in event for Target is taking place right before Walmart’s, from Sept. 3 – 13. If you bring an old car seat to recycle to Target, you will receive a 20% off coupon good toward a new car seat, car seat base, travel system, stroller or select baby home gear.
